Abstract

Healthcare services in the United States are siloed, resulting in a fractured care system and poorer health outcomes. Research has shown the importance of integrating mental health services within the healthcare system, specifically primary care. Additionally, members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and beyond (LGBTQIA+) community have more difficulties accessing culturally appropriate healthcare services than the general population. This study used a quality improvement approach to integrate evidence-based mental health screening in an LGBTQIA+ primary care practice to standardize referrals to mental health treatment. The RE-AIM framework was used to frame data analysis and showed the program increased the number of patients screened for depression and anxiety, improved the number of patients with symptoms of depression and anxiety referred to mental health services and increased the number of patients with a referral linked to mental health services.
