Abstract

The demand for health and well-being coaching (HWC) within healthcare has accelerated in part due to the rising prevalence and cost of chronic lifestyle-sensitive diseases.  Outside of the United States Veterans Health Administration Whole Health System of care, replicable models to implement HWC broadly within healthcare environments is nascent.  In 2023, HWC was introduced as a novel care modality and strategic priority at University Hospitals (UH) in Northeast Ohio to advance whole person, team-based care while providing a professional development opportunity for UH caregivers.  An academic affiliation with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) accelerated the adoption of HWC at UH.  This affiliation created training curricula, mentorship, and preparation for board certification with the National Board of HWC (NBHWC), exclusively for UH caregivers.  To date, two pilot cohorts (40 UH caregivers) have completed the pathway to certification, elevating the need for a UH system-wide strategy to leverage the skills of newly certified HWCs.  The purpose of this project is to: 1.  define a replicable and sustainable system-wide implementation strategy and 2.  evaluate the impact of professional development opportunities on healthcare worker engagement, retention, and recruitment.  The value analysis suggests that the integration of HWCs into healthcare teams is feasible, financially sustainable, and likely to contribute to improved workforce and patient wellbeing.  Use of this implementation strategy will codify the future direction of HWC within healthcare systems and infuse health promotion opportunities to achieve greater value in healthcare.
