Abstract
Organ transplantation is a life-saving medical procedure that has revolutionized the field of medicine and continues to provide hope for thousands of patients in end-stage organ failure that are in need of new organs. As society and the concentration in healthcare shifts towards the effect that social determinants of health can have on an individual or population’s well-being, the world of organ transplantation, specifically with cardiac patients, must also do the same. A total of 83 articles involving both organ transplantation and social determinants of health were reviewed in order to develop a pathway towards equity. Recognition of current transplant disparities highlights the need for continued research involving underserved populations, updated regulations and standards for organ allocation, and enhanced representation of minorities. Utilization of the nursing profession and the remediation of disparities focused on social determinants of health are the building blocks to a more equitable heart transplantation process.
