Dr. Sara Poston leads US Health Outcomes & Epidemiology, Vaccines at GSK. Sara’s team is tasked with generating health economic data and outcomes research that demonstrates the value of vaccines and supports public health decision-making in the US. In her previous roles at GSK, Sara led research studies and launch strategies for therapies in oncology, men’s health, gastroenterology and osteoporosis. She has a PharmD from University of Kentucky and completed the Thomas Jefferson University/ Janssen Health Outcomes and Pharmacoeconomics Fellowship.

Craig Roberts, PharmD, MPA, MBA

Dr. Craig Roberts is currently Associate Vice President for the Center for Observational and Real-world Evidence (CORE) Vaccines Product Line within Merck Research Labs. In this role he leads a research team that designs and conducts research studies to characterize the public health and economic burden of vaccine preventable diseases globally. The team develops data to evaluate the impact of Merck vaccines on disease and applies these data to communicate the value of vaccines to public health decision makers. Prior to joining Merck, Dr Roberts was leading the health economic and outcomes research team supporting Global Vaccines and Consumer Products for Pfizer Inc.

Dr. Roberts earned his PharmD and MPA degrees from the University of Kentucky, received an MBA from New York University, and completed a fellowship in health economics through GlaxoSmithKline and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Vittorio Maio, PharmD, MS, MSPH

Dr. Vittorio Maio has several roles at Thomas Jefferson University. A Research Professor, he is the Director of JCPH’s Applied Health Economics & Outcomes Research Program and the Director of our HEOR Fellowship Program. In addition, Vittorio is the Managing Director of the Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

Dr. Maio is Associate Editor of the American Journal of Medical Quality, and serves as a reviewer for several professional journals, including JAMA-Internal Medicine, The Lancet, Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety, Age and Aging and Drugs & Aging.

He also teaches and conducts research in his native Italy. Having received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Perugia (Italy), Dr. Maio received Italian Pharmacist Board Certification and serves as a grant reviewer for the Italian Ministry of Health. He lectures on health policy issues at the University of Pisa, Italy and lectures on health services.

Abstract

Health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) is a growing field that provides important information for making healthcare coverage and access decisions. As a scientific discipline that quantifies the economic, humanistic and clinical outcomes of medical technology, HEOR helps pharmaceutical and device manufacturers communicate the value of their innovations to stakeholders.
