Description

Sandra Macon, DM, CNM is an advocate for the advancement of diversity in the workforce, supporting transitions to practice within a large federally qualified health center and community hospital. In this environment, she serves as a formal and informal leader to community health workers, doulas, nurses, midwives, and physicians to provide population health care within the social context. As one of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Strong Start for Women and Infants sites, El Rio has demonstrated a path towards midwifery-led community engagement. Dr. Macon manages the Birth and Women’s Health Center Perinatal Data Registry, overseeing the clinicians who use the data registry and helping to ensure data integrity. Through her analysis of practice outcomes and exploration of practice patterns and behaviors, she has led practice changes that resulted in decreased postpartum hemorrhage and subsequent transfers from the free-standing birth center. Her doctoral work compared community birth transfer rates associated with body mass index ≥30 compared to transfer rates associated with age ≥35 or nulliparity.
