Description

Purpose: Facilitate interprofessional education among undergraduate students commencing professional courses in health sciences programs to improve the efficacy of collaborative care models.

Background: Annually medical errors cause the preventable deaths of more than a quarter of a million patients within the United States healthcare delivery system. The actions or inactions of healthcare professionals contribute to these soaring and preventable death rates. A logical supposition is that ineffective communication, unfamiliarity of different roles, and loosely collaborative clinical practices attribute to the high incidence medical errors.

Description of Intervention/Program: The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for Baptist College of Health Sciences (Baptist College) focuses on interprofessional education (IPE). Through Professionals United in Life, Service, and Education (PULSE), the Baptist College QEP, an academic and institutional culture that values IPE and allows students to participate in IPE learning activities is being created. One such PULSE Learning Activity links Basic Skills of Nursing Practice, an entry-level Nursing course, with Patient Care, an entry-level Allied Health Studies course for students starting professional coursework in six different Allied Health programs. Through structured learning activities students will compare and contrast their scopes of practices, transition simulated patients through a designated continuum of care based on given clinical scenarios, and facilitate patient care delivery using clinical simulation.

Relevance to Interprofessional Education: Interprofessional learning activities foster positive role identity and distinction, effective communication across healthcare disciplines, and patient-centered collaborative practice.

Measurable Learning Objectives:

  1. Communicate effectively across the professions of the Baptist College healthcare team.
  2. Demonstrate effective interprofessional team dynamics and values as members of the Baptist College healthcare team.
