CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Welcome to the 2nd Mid-Atlantic Student Wilderness Medicine Conference (MASWM) at Thomas Jefferson University! Our vision for this event is to bring in regional and national academic leaders from the field of wilderness medicine for a weekend conference specifically geared towards students of medicine and other health professions. The two-day conference will consist of morning lectures and hands-on afternoon workshops. Additionally, there will be a call for poster presentations from students involved in wilderness or disaster medicine research. In the evenings we will hold slide show presentations by faculty and students who have been directly involved in wilderness or disaster medicine domestically or abroad.

The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) defines the broad scope of wilderness medicine, including:

“expedition and disaster medicine, search and rescue, altitude illness, cold- and heat-related injuries, dive medicine, trauma, and animal bites and stings ... WMS explores the risks and safety issues in austere environments such as space, desert, marine, mountain, and cave.”

The MASWM Conference will be held in Philadelphia the weekend of March 31 - April 1, 2012.

MASWM is hosted by the Wilderness and Disaster Medicine Society at Thomas Jefferson University.
