Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is a major comorbidity linked to a myriad of health complications and poor treatment outcomes. Through partnership with the PCORI Institute, a comprehensive lifestyle medicine program is being developed to refer eligible patients within the Jefferson Health System. This comparative analysis aims to identify the demographics of these eligible patients.
Methods: Data was extracted from EPIC electronic health record from patients who had a “qualifying” encounter with one of the following specialties: OB/GYN, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine. Qualification of patients in this data collection was based on an encounter with one of the aforementioned specialties within the past two years. Data was analyzed for 1) age being 18 or older, 2) BMI of 25 or higher, and 3) not pregnant. Information for data collection underwent descriptive statistics to characterize population.
Results: Initial dataset yielded a total of 272,933 eligible patients. Of these eligible patients 60.38% were from family medicine. Due to large pool of eligible patients, future analyses will examine population age, sex, race, Area Deprivation Index, and other demographics. Area Deprivation Index will encompass parameters used to gauge social determinants of health: insurance coverage, access to healthcare, etc.
Conclusion: Based on the initial data collection, the majority of eligible patients came from Family medicine encounters within the Jefferson Health system. These findings provide a cursory demographic profile for patients eligible; however, further analysis is required to comprehend the predominant factors within this patient population.
