Abstract
Learning Objectives
- Describe two leading theories of minority stress
- Define the terms "heterosexism" and "internalized heterosexism"
- Distinguish between distal and proximal minority stressors
- Explain the connection between minority stress theory and trauma theory, and minority and non-minority specific factors as contributors to PTSD outcomes for SMW
- Explain the complex role of social support among this population, and how it may impact minority and non-minority specific psychological processes
- Identify and implement best practices for working with trauma-exposed sexual minority women, and incorporate findings from the literature into clinical practice
