Background

- Breast cancer is the most common non-cutaneous malignancy affecting women in the United States, with a lifetime incidence of nearly 13%

- The incidence of female breast cancer is rising, especially for young women (age < 45)

- While only 5-10% of breast cancers in the general population are related to highly penetrant pathogenic germline mutations, pathogenic mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, BARD1, and ATM occur at higher frequency in women diagnosed age < 50 years

  • Mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, and TP53 account for nearly 50% of breast cancers diagnosed before age 30

- Women < 40 years old breast cancer have worse disease-related survival, especially from to early-stage disease
