Taught by Mary Lou Manning, PhD, CRNP and with assistance from Anthony J. Frisby, PhD, NU706 is a fifteen week online course. Students have the unique opportunity to experience the AACN Essentials and QSEN Competencies from multiple vantage points, culminating in creation of team-based, peer-reviewed video productions. During the course, students studied the nature of healthcare error and harm, error reduction strategies and tools, measurement, organizational culture, stakeholders, teamwork, and communication. Students completed safety and teamwork climate (STC) surveys the first and last week of the course. The video production assignment was created to provide students the opportunity to work in virtual teams, acquire a comprehensive evidence-based understanding of a patient safety topic, consult with subject matter experts, distill a complex topic into a five minute educational video production targeted to a selected audience, and personally discover the role of multi-media technology in effective message design and communication.
