Abstract
In America, the historical treatment of mental illness has evolved significantly, shifting from barbaric practices and stigmatization to modern approaches emphasizing community-based care and medication. Early on, individuals with mental illness were often institutionalized in poorly managed asylums with little or no treatment. The 19th century saw the emergence of the Moral Movement which advocated for humane care and a more medical approach to mental illness, but institutionalization continued to be the norm. The 20th century brought advancements like the introduction of psychotropic medications and the development of community mental health centers, leading to deinstitutionalization and increased access to treatment. 60 million adults in the U.S. experienced mental illness in the past year, and 13 million reported serious thoughts of suicide. While many Americans feel there is a crisis, there are also challenges related to access to affordable and comprehensive care, including insurance coverage, aggressive pharmaceutical advertising tactic and the availability of mental health professionals. Digital therapeutics and mobile crisis teams have also emerged as valuable resources. Many find peer support and spiritual practices helpful, while others seek alternative care sites like retail clinics or virtual health. Additionally, policymakers are focusing on building capacity, cultural tailoring initiatives, and integrating mental health care into primary care settings. In conclusion, while there is a growing recognition of the mental health crisis in America and ongoing efforts to address it, significant challenges remain, particularly in ensuring equitable access to care and reducing stigma.
