Abstract

Youth sports participation and sport-based positive youth development programs are beneficial to participants. These programs have even more of an impact on players who are from communities that are considered socially vulnerable and under-resourced. One such program, in the Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood of Harrowgate, is Safe-Hub Philadelphia. Though soccer, life-skills are taught to help develop the whole child. An activity book titled The Quest for the Golden Ball was developed to supplement the education in a read/write learning style for players ages 6 to 10. The activity book consists of educational content mixed with activities, journal prompts with bulleted responses, and coloring. Future consideration for this activity book could include a roll out in the next full season with a study to determine the impact of the educational intervention.
