Abstract

The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a non-military uniform service with more than 6000 well-trained, highly qualified public health professionals. The United States Public Health Service Officers are dedicated to delivering the nation’s public health promotion, disease prevention, and advancing public health science. The Ready Reserve Corp is a part of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. The Ready Reserve Corp was established and signed into law in March 2020 under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. The Ready Reserve Corps offers officers the opportunity to serve their community and country in times of public health crisis in underserved areas. The United States Public Health Service Officers have been deployed to the Ebola outbreak in Africa, hurricane response, Afghanistan repatriation, unaccompanied children, and the COVID-19 pandemic. This capstone explores possible careers for public health professionals in the United States Public Health Service. Extensive information was gathered from multiple government websites to describe the United States Public Health Service and detail its duties. Captain Brian Lewis, United States Public Health Service, and Lieutenant Junior Grade Pamela Myers, Ready Reserve Corp, were interviewed to provide their experience as United States Public Health Service officers. Significant differences exist between the full-time United States Public Health Service and the part-time Ready Reserve Corp. Public Health officials interested in advancing their careers should consider the United States Public Health Service.
