Harmony A. Smith
The journal of Harmony A. Smith contains both lecture notes from Jefferson Medical College, bound together with journal entries from his trip along the Oregon Trail from May 20th to July 6th, 1850. Pages are missing from the notebook – lecture notes begin on p. 22 and end on p. 80, with blank leaves between pp. 69-70, and evidence of paste-ins removed. The Oregon Trail journal begins on p. 29, and ends on p. 80 before the conclusion of the journey to California. The Trail journal includes entries regarding stream crossings, contact with Native Americans, a detailed account of Salt Lake City, and a description of a Mormon sermon. The journal concludes with 4th of July celebrations along the trail. Harmony A. Smith was born in 1818, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1838. The 1880 United States Census lists him as married, and living in Leacock, Pennsylvania. The journal was kindly donated in 2009 by Stephanie B. Spell, in memory of Charles Harmony Barber. Transcriptions of the Oregon Trail journal are included as an additional PDF file. 58 pages of JMC lecture notes; the Oregon Trail journal contains 51 pages.
