1927 graduate of Jefferson Medical College. Professor of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College, 1946-1967, and inventor of the Gibbon heart-lung machine. Cecelia Bavolek, the first patient to undergo a successful heart operation with the machine, appears on the right.
