Outline
- Epidemiology: scope of the problem
- Urination: how does it happen
- Types of urinary incontinence: the differential (stress, urge, mixed, overflow incontinence, reversible causes of incontinence)
- History, physical, office evaluation to help secure diagnosis
- Stepwise approach to management and treatment (behavioral modification, medications)
Objectives
- The learner will realize that the majority of their female patients suffer with incontinence
- Develop system for history and physical based on the differential diagnosis of incontinence
- Feel comfortable counseling patients on lifestyle changes to help with incontinence
- Learn the medications and when to use them
- Know when to refer to urology or urogynecology and which specialty might be more beneficial based on the patient's diagnosis
