Abstract
Approximately 1.3 billion adults worldwide have hypertension.1 Between 2006 and 2013, there was a two-fold increase in Emergency Department visits for hypertensive emergency.2 The prevalence of hypertensive emergency ranges from 0.08% to 0.76% in patients presenting to the Emergency Department.1,3-6 The estimated incidence of hospitalization with a hypertensive emergency is 111 per 100,000 patients.1,7 Hypertensive emergency is also associated with significant morbidity and mortality, often leading to ischemic stroke, pulmonary edema, acute heart failure.3-6 In-hospital mortality among patients with hypertensive emergency varies between 0.48% and 12.5%.5,7 This retrospective cohort study aims to further clarify hypertensive emergency presentation features associated with in-hospital mortality.
