Lauren Burr, MS
As Education Programs Administrator for the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University, Lauren Burr ensures that every aspect of the department’s educational mission runs efficiently – from residency recruitment to medical student rotations and national accreditation. She leads a team of four coordinators who support more than 50 residents and fellows, 30+ rotating trainees, fourth-year medical students who are pursuing general surgery training, and all third-year medical students completing their six-week surgery clerkship. Burr joined Jefferson in 2022 as an education coordinator and was promoted to her current role in May 2024. Before entering graduate medical education, she spent a decade in undergraduate residence life at Rollins College, New College of Florida, and Eckerd College.
“I’ve always loved working with learners, especially adult learners,” she says. “Adults want to learn for the sake of immediate application, so how we present and structure information really matters.”
In her first year as administrator, Burr has refined residency interview and application-review processes, standardized onboarding and offboarding for new and graduating trainees, and transitioned several homegrown systems to more functional online tools. She also manages the department’s compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Board of Surgery standards. She describes this work as “operating in a season of addition,” with each innovation introducing new layers of data and oversight.
Ultimately, though, she says the human element is what distinguishes Jefferson’s program: “Our coordination team is committed to connecting people, handling the details, and creating the structure that lets learners thrive.”
Originally from Dubuque, Iowa, Burr earned a BA in Sociology from Rollins College and an MS in Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She and her wife live in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood.
