As we approach the midpoint of 2025, our 201st year, there are multiple accomplishments and developments to celebrate. Some of the highlights include:
- As noted in the cover story – Joseph Bavaria, MD, has joined us to lead the new Department of Cardiac Surgery and Bruce & Robbi Toll Heart and Vascular Institute.
- Our Lung Transplant Program, led by surgeons Charles Hoopes, MD, and Keshava Rajagopal, MD, has successfully launched, with several lung transplants being completed by the team.
- Our department faculty members continue to publish, on average, between a dozen and 20 peer-reviewed papers per month.
- We hosted seven endowed lectures this past academic year, including the inaugural Scott D. Goldstein, MD, Lecture in memory of our former colleague presented by Gerald A. Isenberg, MD. Other speakers included Drs. Scott R. Steele (Cleveland Clinic), Niels D. Martin (Penn Medicine), Martha A. Zeiger (National Cancer Institute), Randi N. Smith (Emory University), and Jonathan R. Brody (Oregon Health & Science University). Their lectures, and others, are available to view online in the Jefferson Digital Commons: jdc.jefferson.edu/surgerygr.
- We hosted the 15th Annual Philadelphia Surgery Symposium this past April for medical students in Philadelphia and New Jersey. This year’s guest speakers were Jon Morris, MD (University of Pennsylvania), Marshall Miles, DO (Lehigh Valley Health Network) and our own Vice Chair for Education, Karen Chojnacki, MD.
- The Department of Surgery Pilot Grant Program continued supporting our surgeon-scientists by funding four research projects this year. This program helps researchers provide proof of concept, making them more competitive for additional external funding. In the Changing Lives Through Research column, two former awardees provide updates on their research (see page 3).
- Our three general surgery residency programs at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Jefferson Abington Hospital and Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, had a very successful match season. Over 4,600 applicants applied for 16 categorical positions at Jefferson Health.
These are just a few of the highlights for Jefferson Surgery. Onward and upward!
