Mona Sarfaty, MD, FAAFP, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine and School of Population Health Thomas Jefferson University. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Her current research focuses on policy initiatives in cancer prevention and control, and outcomes improvement in primary care. Her consulting work has focused on the development of disease management programs in diabetes, hypertension, and weight control in children. She teaches in Jefferson’s Master of Public Health Program, where she is Chair of the Curriculum Committee. From 2001-2003, she was the Medical Director of a colorectal cancer education and screening program in the largest county in Maryland that had twin goals of decreasing cancer mortality and eliminating cancer disparities. Dr. Sarfaty was formerly on the faculty of the George Washington University (GWU) School of Public Health and Health Services and the GWU Medical Center. During that time she initiated several innovative programs. Prior to her membership on the GW faculty, Dr. Sarfaty was a Senior Health Policy Advisor to the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee (1985-92). She was responsible for programs within the U.S. Public Health Service, including NIH, CDC, HRSA, and FDA. She initiated the bill that became law now known as EMTALA that mandated evaluation for all patients who present to emergency rooms. She developed comprehensive legislation on HIV/AIDS, and Tobacco. Dr. Sarfaty is the Chair-Elect of the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association and sits on its Governing Council. She has received a number of awards for her efforts to improve the public’s health.
